What did you all do this weekend ? I cleaned up the TDI and the Tacoma. And of course hit up Hunt Valley cars & coffee !

Nice! That looks fun. Pretty color on the Tacoma, too. That was my initial first choice, but went with Barcelona Red, since my wife’s GC is blue. Coming out of back to back black vehicles, I wanted a color that was a little easier to keep clean.

Yeah the Tacoma is my Dad’s, its a good color, but its a bitch to keep clean, and every time my mom drives it, she scrapes it on something, so it only looks good from 20 feet now, its an excellent truck though

I set them up to look like the Forza view I like...

I have an OBDII bluetooth plug that sends the rpm, brake, throttle, and speed data to the camera which has the gps and accelerameter built in. My old GoPro died on me earlier this year after 7 years of hard use and I replaced it with a Garmin Virbe XE with all the fancy do dads.

I worked most of it. I did just have a dream where I had an E30 M3 that washe both auto and manual. As in, you can use the auto shifter and put it in D or row your own with a clutch. It didn’t make much sense.

R/C boat race where none of my shit worked right. One nitro boat kept overheating and spitting out its glow plug, the other just never got to peak power. My gas hydroplane cracked its expansion pipe in the last heat and took me out or trophy contention.

You know, the real most wonderful time of the year: Le Mans cars in my backyard.

Covered Lone Star Le Mans. Woke up early to watch a better-than-usual (.....at the start, anyway) Singapore race, then passed out with Patrick’s blessing. Woke up in time to catch a little NASCAR and PWC before the Indy finale. Ate a burrito. Napped more.

9/10 GOOD WEEKEND, but now I really wanna drive something on track, dang it. Lots of watching. Need more doing.

I have only brief experience with the 2005-2015 Tacoma. I’ve driven a couple of them off-road (the type of a off road you could technically do in a Camry) and I test drove a 2014 back to back with the 2016 I ended up buying. Before I had the Tacoma I had a beater Dakota weekend truck, now the Tacoma is my DD. Just to give you background.

Overall, I would say the Tacoma engine is “good” without being outstanding. I really miss having a V8, and looking in the engine bay, it looks like they could have given me one. The big complaint about the new driveline is excessive shifting. To some degree this is true. With a six speed transmission, it really like to shift early and try to hold those higher gears. But honestly, if you’re in a relaxed mood and just keeping a nice pace, it seems to work very well for the most part.

This weekend I got a chance to use low range for a bit. Most of the time I was in four wheel high, but there was a point where a tree had fallen over the road and I had to make/take a bypass through the forest. This involved a pretty tight squeeze through a couple of trees down a 35ish degree 5 foot slope. With the truck in 4WD LOW and held in first gear, the truck was very controllable and I was able to thread that needle. Since I have the 4WD TRD Off Road I had the option for crawl control, which would have made it even easier, but I wanted to do it myself.

Going through a shallow water crossing (the water barely kissed the frame) there was a fairly steep exit. Again in 4WD low the engine made quick work of that small climb, never seeming to be taxed at all. Also, temperature stayed steady regardless of slow going, steep hills, and 95+ temperatures.

Overall, I have to say the engine is “good enough” for on road driving and manners, and, with my limited experience off road, is “very good” off road and holds the truck on steep stuff surprisingly well, although, of course, not as good as a V8. As to the truck as a whole, having driven the new one and the old one, the new truck is so much better. They may say it hasn’t changed much, but what they’ve done is kept what’s great, while giving a hugely upgraded interior space. As we pulled back on to pavement after two hours of trails, my girlfriend commented it made the transition from off-road warrior to luxury car seamlessly.

Sounds like it did a good job for sure. Yeah the one thing with my dad’s is the same thing, it is pretty eager to stay in a high gear on the pavement, I’m sure mostly for fuel economy reasons but the transmission and engine seem more than enough if you need to step into it. I agree that the torque from a small V8 might be nice at times, especially on the 4-door long bed like mine, it just feels awfully heavy sometimes. But then again the few times I have towed with it, it does not struggle. I have a steep hill behind my house that goes into a field that we will drive the trucks down from time to time. A friend of mine took his 2WD Chevy 2500 down there and I was able to tow him back up the hill in 4wd low no problem. I just don’t think that its that Toyota can’t give us a V8, its that they don’t want to take market share from the Tundra and that its probably just too fuel inefficient for its class with a larger engine

I, too, have the double cab long bed, making it a DCLBTRDOR (LOL). I pretty much agree with everything you said. And that pretty much sums up the truck. It is just so “good enough” at everything it does you have to kind of love it. I haven’t towed anything with mine yet but it does have the tow package. The truck doesn’t seem to notice when it’s bed is full. I’m kind of excited to try towing with it. Perhaps during the winter I’ll pick up a project jet ski... ohhhh and a project dirt bike haha.

Yeah, don’t go and tow anything heavy, but it tows just fine haha, maybe that should be the official oppo of the Tacoma (“Its just good enough at everything”) But to be fair, its better than every other mid size at just about everything too
